Dr. Mayo Friedlis Invited By Chinese University of Hong Kong to Lecture Primary Care Physicians on “The Role of Injection Therapy in Musculoskeletal Intervention” on July 4, 2015
StemCell ARTS, an affiliate of National Spine & Pain Centers, is proud toannounce that Dr. Mayo Friedlis was invited to co-lead the esteemed “CUHK Primary Care Symposium 2015” on July 4, 2015 in Hong Kong, N.T, People’s Republic of China. Dr. Friedlis will present a Plenary Lecture on “Musculoskeletal Intervention of Primary Care Physicians: The Role on Injection Therapy”. His poster presentation intends to inspire the advancement of primary care physicians’ understanding of regenerative medicine.
Dr. Friedlis is a pain management specialist, and has been practicing for over 25 years. He is considered to be a pioneer physician in the field of regenerative medical therapies. In his view, scientifically, regenerative medical therapies are demonstrating promise in reducing the pain from musculoskeletal injuries and degenerative conditions of the knee, shoulder, back, hip, and spinal joints and ligaments. Dr. Friedlis’ presentation is designed to educate primary care physicians about specific injection therapy techniques such as stem cell therapy, platelet rich plasma (PRP), platelet lysate, and prolotherapy. These advanced medical techniques are performed in a doctor’s office, often same day, and offer the patient the convenience and cost-savings of little down time. These procedures are rapidly becoming an alternative or method of deferral for expensive joint replacement surgeries of the knee and hip. He advocates for the use of Injection Therapy in non-invasive regenerative procedures, and the important role it plays in promoting more rapid healing through the use of your body’s own healing mechanisms with adult stem cells and blood platelets.
Dr. Friedlis frequently lectures on the subject of regenerative injection techniques, both nationally and internationally. He has been instrumental in bringing regenerative techniques to many countries throughout the world.
Dr. Friedlis is Past-President and sits on the Board of Directors of the American Association of Orthopedic Medicine and co-chairs its Education Committee in Virginia. In addition, he was recently appointed to the prestigious American Society of Interventional Pain Practitioners'(ASIPP) Regenerative Medicine Committee. He has been honored by his peers who vote him a “Top Doctor” in WASHINGTONIAN Magazine and NORTHERN VIRGINIA Magazine. He has also appeared on FOX5-WTTG, WUSA9 and other news outlets.
Injection therapy techniques are rapidly being adopted as potential alternatives to invasive orthopedic techniques such a joint replacement surgery, or used as an adjunct to help a patient heal faster. Many patients say they seek and prefer these innovative, natural techniques to avoid the extensive recovery period that surgical procedures require. Joint replacements often need to be replaced approximately every 15-20 years. Hence, some patients may need multiple joint replacement surgeries over the course of their lifetimes.
The event location is the Shaw Auditorium, School of Public Health Building, Prince of Wales Hospital, Shatin, Hong Kong, N.T., People’s Republic of China. Event details and registration information can be found here.

An excellent article was posted this month at The New Yorker’s online hub – newyorker.com
The article looks at PRP treatments, with the story of Chris Waddell, an athlete who was paralyzed in a college skiing accident, but went on to accomplish amazing athletic achievements including five gold medals in the Paralympic Games. After experiencing a rotator cuff tear and torn biceps tendon, he tried rehab, exercises and cortisone shots with limited success. Facing surgery, he decided to try PRP. His return to health has been remarkable.

New Data out from Regenexx this week shows that BMI may not impact outcomes of stem cell procedures. The data is based on the Regenexx advanced treatment registry, which collects outcome information as patients are treated. Their biostatistician queried the database for Regenexx-SD (same-day) knee stem cell treatment patients vs. their Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI means the patient’s weight vs. their height. The current guidelines state that normal weight is a BMI of 18.5-25 and overweight is 25-30 and obese is >30.
BMI had previously been considered to be one factor that may produce different outcomes for an individual, but the new data shows that at 1 month, 3 month, 6 months and 12 month follow-ups after the procedure, there was no indication that a high BMI had any impact on a patient’s outcome.

A group of researchers at University Hospital of Parma in Italy collaborated to demonstrate potential benefit of PRP application to muscle strains.
Drs. Gernuzzi, Petraglia, Pedrini, De Fillipo, Pogliacomi, Verdano, and Constantino have recruited a total of 53 patients who had an acute muscle tear of various muscles in their university emergency room. Patients recruited were all recreational athletes in different sports such as volleyball, soccer, basketball, and dancing.
Ultrasound was used to grade the tear, and only grade II (moderate) tear was recruited for the study and they all received PRP injections under ultrasound guidance for a total of 3 times, one week apart of each other. The study demonstrated these patients treated with PRP demonstrated clinically meaningful improvement in pain scale (as measured by visual analogue scale of pain), improvement in visual characteristic on ultrasound, and 100% of patients returned to their regular sporting activity within 30 days of the last injection. Only one patient experienced a relapse of the injury by one year follow up.
This study was unique in that it looked at the efficacy of PRP application to acute muscle injuries whereas most PRP studies have investigated its application to chronic tendinous / ligamentous injuries or cartilage lesions.
Time to improvement in this study was also unique. Most chronic tendinous injuries have been reported to have much slower response to PRP (weeks to months), this study has suggested muscular application of PRP may result in faster resolution of pain and recovery of function.
While this study suggested safety and potential benefit to PRP application to acute, moderate muscle tears, further study is warranted to compare PRP with conventional conservative treatment (a design known as a randomized control trial), and also, future studies should investigate the effect of PRP per different muscle types.
