Since joining National Spine & Pain Centers/StemCell ARTS in 1983, Dr. Friedlis has helped expand the practice into the thriving, nationally recognized leader it is today. He is passionate about the science of pain management and committed to delivering the most effective therapies possible to each of his patients. Throughout his 25+ years of experience he has actively enhanced his knowledge and expertise through continuing education, training and research. This has established him in the region as the foremost practitioner of Regenerative therapies for musculoskeletal injuries.

In addition to being skilled in conventional interventional techniques, Dr. Friedlis is pleased to have introduced the idea of Regenerative Treatments for musculoskeletal injuries and disease to the Washington DC area over 20 years ago. “In 2012, I decided to bring the Regenexx Protocols for Regenerative Medicine into the practice, as I believe that they represent the highest state of the art for regenerative treatments. Their research is strong and ongoing, which is important for the ongoing development of this science.” He is responsible for introducing these advanced regenerative techniques into the arsenal of treatment options now available at National Spine & Pain Centers and StemCell ARTS.

Dr. Mayo Friedlis Was Just Named “Top Doctor” by Northern Virginia Magazine

Dr. Friedlis is passionate about helping people in pain, whether their problem is simple or complex. He believes that “we must always challenge ourselves to stay on the cutting edge of our field. We must evaluate each new treatment option that comes available and gauge if it can help our patients. If it can, then we have a responsibility to do what it takes to bring it into practice, so that our patients can benefit.” His philosophy is to approach each case individually, with the goal of actually curing the patient, as opposed to simply controlling their pain. “Find the underlying cause of somebody’s problem and actually try to fix it” is his motto.

An advocate for global stewardship, Dr. Friedlis coordinated many medical mission trips to Central Mexico, and Peru that were sponsored by the American Association of Orthopedic Medicine and provided much-needed pain management services to poor, rural communities.

Dr. Friedlis was voted among WASHINGTONIAN and NORTHERN VIRGINIA Magazine’s Top Doctors. He is currently serving as Co-Medical Director of National Spine and Pain-VA. Dr. Friedlis is a nationally recognized expert in pain and is a frequent speaker at national conferences on Regenerative Therapies. Dr. Friedlis earned his medical degree from Wayne State University and was selected Chief Resident during his residency at Sinai Hospital in Detroit. He is Board Certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and is a Diplomat of the American Academy of Pain Management and the National Board of Medical Examiners. He maintains several active memberships, including the American Association of Orthopedic Medicine, American Academy of Pain Management, American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, the International Spinal Injection Society and Virginia Medical Society.

Dr. Friedlis – Patient Success Story

Dr. Friedlis and his PA Caitlyn have been lifesavers. I was involved in an awful accident in February 2015 in which I suffered a broken thumb and wrist in addition to torn ligaments. Due to severe swelling I developed compartment syndrome and required emergency surgery. I was left with permanent nerve damage, loss of function and feeling in the thumb, and further developed CRPS (complex regional pain syndrome) also known as RSD (reflex sympthatic dystrophy) which is an unbearable pain disorder.

When I was referred to Dr. Friedlis I was in unbearable, debilitating pain 24 hours of every day. Caitlyn worked tirelessly with me to get me on a medication regimen that worked to relieve some of the pain, while Dr. Friedlis put together a treatment plan. I first tried some stellate ganglion nerve injections, with no relief from pain. We then moved on to Prolotherapy injections that have been a lifesaver.

Since beginning these treatments I have been able to return to work full time with a great reduction in pain. Although I still have days of severe pain, it is now manageable due to the treatment I have received. I look forward to continuing my care and am hopeful to continue to reduce overall pain, and increase my overall activity level.

Both Dr. Friedlis and Caitlyn have spent adequate time with me during appointments, and I have always felt heard, understood, and cared about. I would also like to thank the front desk staff for always greeting me with a warm hello and smile. It is difficult to find personable office staff these days, and the women working the front desk have always been a pleasure to work with. If I’ve called with increased pain, they’ve demonstrated great concern and have always worked with me to squeeze in an emergency appointment if needed.

Chronic pain is emotionally and physically draining, and the staff have been nothing short of a miracle throughout the past year. I hope to never need to refer anyone to them, but I would in a heartbeat. Thank you for all that you do, for working with me throughout my darkest times, and for holding on to the hope when I had lost it.
