Treatment: Stem Cell Series / Bilateral Knee
Mark Stickley has a passion for running, logging over 100,000 miles since starting the sport over 35 years ago. The 51-year-old has competed internationally and has competed in three Olympic trials. He has his own running specialty store, “Runners’ Retreat” in Winchester, VA.
Genetically predisposed with flat feet, Mark was unaware of the strain this placed on his knees. One of his knees suddenly gave out halfway into a 10 mile training run. The pain was intense and Mark was certain that his running career was over.
Mark had arthroscopic knee surgery followed by a series of treatments including chiropractic therapy, myofacial release and cortisone injections. Unfortunately, Mark was only able to run a few miles per day and had difficulty walking up a simple flight of stairs. Mark’s knee became increasingly worse and he considered having a second reconstructive surgery.
After a comprehensive evaluation at StemCell ARTS, an affiliate of National Spine and Pain Centers, Mark was recommended the stem cell series of injections to treat the knee pain and regain previous mobility.
Mark received three highly-coordinated treatments designed to help his knees heal themselves, including Prolotherapy, Stem Cell Therapy and Platelet Procedures. These treatments are all designed to activate the body’s own natural healing ability to restore damaged cartilage, heal tissue and tighten ligaments.
After receiving treatment, Mark started to feel better immediately. He used crutches for two weeks to aid the healing process and has dedicated himself to physical therapy. Mark also had new orthotic inserts made for his shoes to correct his flat feet. After a few months, Mark began running again and is now slowly resuming the sport. He hopes to be able to run competitively, again. He also plans to use his new mobility to do more activities with his family.
“This has given me a second chance that I didn’t think I’d ever have,” declared Mark. “I believe I’ve found the ‘Fountain of Youth.’ I’m extremely glad I decided to do it. I would do it again in a heartbeat.”
Mark’s advice for anyone suffering from knee pain? ”There are other options besides surgery.”
