Diagnosing Pain with Steroid Injections Before Regenerative Treatments

Pinpointing pain can often be a difficult task. When patients come to see our physicians, they have been dealing with their pain for months or even years. Low back pain plagues 31 million Americans at any given time. Platelets and Prolotherapy have been proven in our practice to effectively help treat low back pain. Since these procedures are not yet covered under insurances, our physicians perform diagnostic cortisone injections in order to determine which areas are causing patients pain. If a patient is able to be provided relief from these diagnostic injections, then platelets or prolotherapy will be the next steps. Regenerative treatments are scheduled three to four weeks after any steroid injections. Platelets and prolotherapy aim to create inflammation in order to alert your body to send repair cells to the site. Steroids inhibit inflammation, and therefore, counterintuitive to regenerative treatments.

While we hope that one day, these effective treatments will be accepted and paid for by insurance companies, there is not yet a set timeline. Sometimes one or two cortisone injections are all that it takes to settle down an inflamed nerve. For those with chronic back pain that have exhausted the use of steroids, our regenerative procedures could be your answer. Contact our office to schedule your consultation to determine your candidacy for our procedures!
